Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between percentage change and percentage points?
An interest rate moving from 4% to 5% is a 1 percentage-point increase, but a 25% percentage change. Use 'points' when talking about rate deltas to avoid confusion.
Can a percentage increase exceed 100%?
Yes. Going from 50 to 200 is a 300% increase (4× the original). Only decreases are capped — you can't decrease by more than 100% (that would imply a negative result).
How do I reverse-calculate a discount?
If the sale price is €60 after a 25% discount, original = 60 / (1 − 0.25) = €80. The tool has a dedicated 'reverse discount' mode.
What's the trick for percentages?
X% of Y = Y% of X. 18% of 50 is the same as 50% of 18 = 9. Handy for mental maths.
