The code encodes a string like WIFI:T:WPA;S:MyNetwork;P:MyPassword;; — a de facto standard supported by iOS, Android and most modern QR readers. Nothing proprietary, nothing server-side.

Which phones support Wi-Fi QR scanning?

Which security type should I pick?
WPA/WPA2 for almost all home routers. WEP only if your network is very old (and consider upgrading — WEP is broken). 'No password' for open networks.
Does the password leave my device?
No. The QR code is generated entirely in your browser. The password is only in the QR image — which you control where to print or display.
What about hidden SSIDs?
